ABOUT Dave White
Dave White was born in the South Island, New Zealand, 1958, and raised on the West Coast, spending much time roasting guitars and other electronic equipment in bars from Fox Glacier to Poland, with Austin, Texas, New York and the South of France fave haunts. White has been an instigator of various performing arts centres & venues around NZ, notably “The Stomach” in Palmerston North which is still thriving celebrating it's 30 year birthday in 2018, “The Artery” & “The Phat Club” & “Phat Festivals” in Nelson & Inangahua on the West Coast. His first book, a novel entitled “Bad Acid Soundtracks” is available from Subsonic Press. Dave recently walked the plank with his partner Tess, & together they have continued to run events as The Happy Collective such as the Sweet Az Festival. Dave is currently investigating starting a new Artery style venue with the Cortex Collective in Nelson & has more writing projects in the pipeline. THE BOOK OF PHAT
Dave White's personal memories of the history of the Phat Club & Phat Festival, known internationally for mud, mayhem & drum n bass. Based in Nelson New Zealand, the club followed on from the demise of The Artery, promoting original live punk, metal, reggae, dub & alternative rock live bands plus incorporating the hottest NZ & international electronica producers especially in the realms of house, breaks, hip hop,dub & drum n bass styles. The festival began in the mighty Maitai Valley with the Phat Outdoors 2003 before moving to Canaan Downs on the Takaka Hill for 2 years & then finding it's spiritual home at Inangahua on the West Coast where it ran until 2012, attracting up to 7000 phatheads from around the globe to what became an iconic 5 day celebration of all things bass with a little punk on the side. Dave White, guitarist/vocalist for Lung & Claires Un Natural Twin, owner of Yellow Bike Records, editor of Valve Magazine, his first novel published in 1999, now into it's 3rd print run & available by PM Dave Rudeboy Red White http://www.facebook.com/Rudeboy.Red.5
The book originally became a finalist in the Reed New Fiction Awards as a short story entitled Battery Acid, documenting Lungs lengthy American Tour during the early nineties just after the death of Nirvana. Written essentially in verse to be read aloud the original print run of 1000 was quickly absorbed thru cafe sales at major NZ dance parties such as the Gathering. Exploring all things punk in nature & reviewed as a highly original portrayal of an extremely marginalised & little written about faction of the NZ music underground, told up close & personal by seasoned combatants.
